Police Rescue distressed man

Two busy roads were shut down Friday afternoon in Maiden as police tried to talk a man threatening to jump from a bridge to come off the bridge.  It happened at the Startown exit over Highway 321.  The man had already injured himself with a knife and said he intended to jump.  Maiden police Sgt. Joe Painter was finally able to grab the mans shirt collar and wait of his pants to pull him off the bridge railing to safety.  The man was transported to Catawba Valley Medical center to be treated for serious self inflicted cuts and to undergo evaluation.
