March 14, 2020–Message from the Superintendent’s Office

We want to be sure that the entire HPS family–students, staff, parents/guardians–are aware of the plans and that everyone has accurate information regarding the steps HPS is taking in addressing the Coronavirus.

The district is in communication with the Catawba County Public Health department on a daily basis for guidance as well as the Department of Public Instruction (DPI).  All nine principals met with Superintendent Adell and the district leadership team to discuss plans to be proactive and ensure everyone is receiving the same messages.

The Center for Disease Control and Catawba County Public Health have posted information on their websites with information about the virus. The website contains a link to updated information that includes numbers to contact for more information and the number to contact if a case is suspected.

The district will be restricting visitors to the school sites beginning on Monday, March 16, 2020.  It is requested that only essential visitors be allowed throughout the school.  Examples of essential visitors include Department of Juvenile Justice, Department of Social Services, approved tutors, and student teachers.  If you have a question as to whether someone is considered essential, please communicate with the school’s principal.

HPS is taking direction from Catawba County Public Health and other local agencies concerning school closing.  In order to be proactive and ensure we are providing the best education for our students, the principals will work with staff members to develop a plan for continuing education in an online format– if indeed this plan becomes a necessary action.

Since this is a fluid situation and changes are occurring frequently, we will provide updates on a weekly basis, or more, as needed.  During times like this, there can be lots of inaccurate information in the community which can lead to increased anxiety. We will only share information that has been verified and confirmed.

Please continue to follow the preventative guidelines from CDC and public health that have been shared.
If you have any questions, contact your school’s principal.
