NEWTON – On man is dead following a hostage situation on Village Circle in Mountain View.
Deputies responded to a hostage call involving two adult male family members at approximately 6:34 this morning (Saturday, Oct. 1). The report stated that the hostage taker was reportedly armed with a handgun.
Catawba County’s Special Tactics and Response (STAR) and Crisis Intervention and De-escalation Teams responded to the call.
Despite several reported attempts to de-escalate the situation and requests to release the hostage, the hostage taker allegedly continued to threaten the hostage and the hostage taker was shot by deputies.
“These incidents are tragic for all involved. We are thankful that the hostage was not injured and that no further loss of life occurred,” said Sheriff Brown in the press release. “We will assist and cooperate fully with the SBI as they investigate. Our thoughts and prayers are with this family and with all of law enforcement officers and their families affected by this incident,” continued Sheriff Brown.
The incident is being investigated by the SBI and Catawba County Sheriff’s Office will do an internal review.
