The Alexander County Board of Commissioners approved a measure at their meeting on Tuesday, May 12, 2026, to accept state grant money for streamflow rehabilitation projects.
Soil and Water Conservation District Director Pamela Bowman presented the item to the board, noting the Streamflow Rehabilitation Assistance Program (StRAP) awarded the Alexander District $516,000 to remove debris from six to eight streams that were impacted by Hurricane Helene. The project will require the County to initially cover construction and administrative costs, with 100 percent reimbursement provided by the State, as has been done in previous StRAP projects here.
The District has received and used StRAP funding four times for various clogged streams since November 2020, after Tropical Storms Eta and Zeta came through this area. This amounts to $853,806 in total funds which helped clear 15 sites with 36,303 linear feet of total debris removal.
County Commissioners unanimously approved the item.
