Catawba County Schools Announce Make-Up Days

Important Message from Catawba County Schools:

We have experienced some difficult weather conditions in the 2018-19 school year. This year our school calendar began with a total of 1070 instructional hours for students; we are required by the state to have no less than 1025 instructional hours per school year. We have already used 40 hours of banked instructional time. As a result, we are left with only nine (9) hours. In order to gain valuable instructional time, we have taken the remaining two half days for students left in our calendar and will convert each day to full student days, giving the district a total of 15 hours of
banked time for inclement weather.

  • February 27, 2019 – previously an early release day for students, will now become a full day for students
  • March 20. 2019 – previously an early release day for students, will now become a full day for students

Please note that is the only definitive change at this point in time. We will have to see what the weather holds in the upcoming weeks. However, we have also listed a POTENTIAL PLAN should we have more hazardous weather and dip below the amount of instructional time required.

Please note this is not a definitive plan, but rather a possible plan should the need arise. The proposals are in the order of which we would gain back student instructional days.

  • Convert the February 18 and March 29 workdays into student days.
  • Add additional days at the end of the school year, not surpassing June 14 due to the calendar law
  • Add additional time to each school day.

We have had several inquiries regarding the use of spring break being used to gain back instructional time. We have no plans to use spring break, but rather create a plan that works best for our students, staff, and community. We know that making up instructional time is sometimes difficult for some, but we also know how important this time is for our students.

Thank you for your flexibility and continued support of Catawba County Schools!
