One person dead in Industrial accident

Iredell County Emergency Services and area Hazardous Material Response Teams responded on Friday, January 10, 2020 to a hazardous material release at Lineage Logistics in Statesville. Plant personnel called Iredell Emergency Communications just before 2:00 pm to report an incident involving an anhydrous ammonia leak inside their facility on Taylorsville Highway. One worker at the plant was pronounced dead at the scene and one worker was transported to a Winston Salem hospital in critical condition. Two Iredell County emergency responders were evaluated at a local hospital as a precaution for their exposure to the chemical. They were released early Friday evening. Hazardous Material Response Teams and Emergency Services staff are monitoring conditions inside the plant and in the area around the plant. Air monitoring outside the plant shows levels well below the threshold for concern to area residents and should not cause health issues. Emergency responders will be on scene through tomorrow mitigating the leak and residents should use caution and avoid the area. Agencies on-scene include Iredell County Emergency Management, Monticello Fire Department, Statesville Fire and Hazardous Material Response Team, Mooresville Fire and Hazardous Material Response Team, Regional Response Team – 7 Hazardous Materials Response Team from Charlotte Fire Department, Iredell County EMS, Iredell County Rescue Squad, Iredell County Sheriff’s Office, NC State Highway Patrol, and US EPA.
