Newton announces operational changes

NEWTON, NC—Out of concern for public safety and in response to the rapidly evolving coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, the City of Newton announces the following changes effective immediately:

· Regular hours for Newton City Hall will be 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. City staff will clean and disinfect between 4 p.m. and 5 p.m.

The City encourages all customers to avoid paying bills in person at City Hall and to use alternate payment methods, including by mail, through our online portal at www.newtonnc.gov, or by calling 888-272-9829.

· Access to the Newton Police Department will be limited to emergencies only. Non-emergency concerns and questions should be addressed by calling the Police Department at 828-465-7430. If you have an emergency, call 911.

· Access to the Newton Fire Department will be limited to emergencies only. Non-emergency concerns and questions should be addressed by calling the Fire Department at 828-695-4314. If you have an emergency, call 911.

· Newton Parks and Recreation Department facilities, including recreation centers, gyms, and workout rooms, are closed to the public until further notice. Concerns and questions should be addressed by calling the Parks and Recreation Department at 828-695-4317.

· The Newton Public Works Facility is closed to the public until further notice. Concerns and questions should be addressed by calling the Public Works Department at 828-695-4310.

The City of Newton will continue to provide services including public safety, water/wastewater, electricity, and sanitation. Protecting the health, safety and welfare of our neighbors is the City’s highest priority.

The City will continue to evaluate and make adjustments as needed.
