Police Warn Citizens of Phone Scam

Citizens in Catawba County are being warned about a phone scam circulating in the area.  According to The Catawba County Sheriff’s Office, people have reported receiving calls from someone pretending to be a deputy and/or Sheriff Brown as well as agents from the Social Security Administration.

These scammers give fake badge number as well as case and warrant numbers and are asking people withdraw and/or transfer funds. Some victims have reported being told that their social security numbers have been compromised or that they’re being investigated for money laundering. These callers have no connection to the Sheriff’s Office. Investigators are working to identify these scammers.

Anyone having questions or concerns about the legitimacy of a phone call they receive where people are claiming to be law enforcement or government officials are asked to contact the Catawba County Sheriff’s Office as 828-464-5241.
