There were some tense moments in Downtown Morganton on Saturday after a group waving Confederate flags were met by a group of Black Lives Matter activists. The Confederate supporters had gathered to protect a monument after social media rumors that the other group had planned to try to tear the monument down. Things did get heated and words were exchanged, but the situation never turned violent. Police were able to separate the groups and keep the peace and no one was arrested.
