The Burke County Sheriff’s Office has been brought in to investigate the death of an inmate at the Burke County Jail. Charles Benthum Hughes of Morganton was placed in a single cell on September 22 for safety reasons after a fight with another inmate. WSOCTV reports that later that morning an officer found Hughes hanging from his bed sheet.
