The Caldwell County Board of Commissioners passed a resolution in support of a statewide effort by school systems to give local boards the ability to set the beginning and ending of each school year, according to the Lenoir News-Topic. In a statement, Superintendent Dr. Donald Phipps said allowing the start of the school year to start earlier than the last week of August would make it easier to make up for days missed because of snow, high school schedules could better match college schedules, sports and other extracurricular activities could line up better with the academic year, and a shorter summer break would decrease how much students forget over the break.
