A former Catawba County official pled guilty in a wire fraud case.  65 year old Barry Bryan Edwards, former Director of Utilities, pled guilty to wire fraud conspiracy for accepting kickbacks and bribes from a private contractor.  He admitted to receiving gifts, such as meals and tickets to events totaling over $30,000 to influence decisions.  The charges have a max penalty of 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.  No sentencing date is set.  The announcement came from Dena J King, the US Attorney for the Western District of NC.
