Drexel – A school in Burke County was put on alert on Tuesday, August 30 following a report that a man with a weapon may have run onto campus. Kicks 103.3 reached out to Burke County Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Swan.
“Drexel Elementary School was placed on lockdown this morning [August 30] around 9:40 a.m. as there was law enforcement activity in the area. Law enforcement apparently tried to stop a vehicle and someone took off on foot and ran on school property. Law enforcement can confirm the details but we heard reports that the person had a weapon in a backpack,” stated Dr. Swan in an email. “Principal Jessie Gravel alerted parents of the lockdown and when it was lifted. Students and staff remained safe and secure inside the building and continued with the instruction day!”
Burke County Public Schools has taken proactive steps to keep students and employees safe. Prior to the start of the school year, faculty within the Burke County School district attended a training with law enforcement about keeping students and schools safe. In a separate “Stop the bleed” training, district employees collaborated with emergency service personnel on how to respond to students who are in need of emergency medical services.
