FATALITY BACKS UP TRAFFIC ON HWY 321

HICKORY – A young man was fatally wounded from a reported self-inflicted gunshot injury, according to a press release for the Hickory Police Department (HPD). 
The fatality follows a series of events in which a young man reportedly made an early morning (2:36 a.m.)  911 call saying that he had been shot and was going to take his own life on Tuesday, Sept. 20.  Officers responding to the call located the individual traveling near HWY 70 SW and HWY 321 SW.  
Concurrently, Catawba County Sheriff’s Office was responding to an alleged shooting near Startown Rd., possibly related to the same person. 
HPD Officers attempted to stop the vehicle, but it continued to travel north on HWY 321 in the southbound lanes. Officers followed the vehicle in the northbound lanes into Caldwell County. 
According to the report, when the vehicle reached the city limits of Lenoir, the Lenoir Police deployed stop sticks which disabled the vehicle. The vehicle veered to the right and stopped on the northbound side of Highway 321.
Upon approaching the vehicle, officers found twenty-one-year-old James Jarmel Ivey Jr, fatally wounded from a reported self-inflicted gunshot injury.
According to the press release from the Hickory Police Department, the Lenoir Police Department is investigating incident.
