Man caught Smuggling Fentanyl

On Wednesday, February 22, 2023, Jonathan Lynn Sorrels, 35, of Conover, NC, was sentenced to a prison term of six to eight years following his conviction for trafficking opiates in Catawba County Superior Court.  The Honorable Nathaniel J. Poovey, Superior Court Judge from Catawba County, imposed the terms of the plea agreement after Sorrels entered his guilty plea. The crime occurred on November 1, 2021, when deputies from the Catawba County Sheriff’s Office pulled over Sorrels during a traffic stop. A K-9 unit alerted to the presence of drugs, and during a search, Sorrels dropped two clear bags containing a white powdery substance to the ground that were later determined to be fentanyl by the State Crime Lab. In addition to his prison sentence, Sorrels was also required to pay a mandatory fine of $50,000. The case was investigated by Sam Helms of the Catawba County Sheriff’s Office and prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Nancy Lee.
