David Andrew Barnes, a 37-year-old man from Morganton, was sentenced to a minimum of just over three years in prison for a fatal shooting in August 2018. Barnes received credit for 210 days of time served after entering a guilty plea to voluntary manslaughter earlier this year. The incident took place during an argument between Barnes and the victim, Roger Dewayne Hoglan, in eastern Burke County. Barnes claimed he believed Hoglan was trying to run him over, leading to the shooting.
