Burke County has received a national award for a project to bring awareness to animals in the animal shelter. The National Association of Counties recognized Burke Counties pet of the month program. At the County Commissioner’s business meeting each month a shelter dog and a slide presentation of a shelter cat are brought in and introduced during the meeting. This is a popular segment each month and has been since its inception in 2019.
