Construction Worker Killed in Collision

Two construction workers were struck and NC 150 was closed for two hours following a collision Monday afternoon in Sherrill’s Ford. According to the North Carolina Highway Patrol, 80-year-old Jerry Lee Johnson of Sherrill’s Ford was traveling west in a construction zone on NC 150 when he struck crew flaggers who were in the roadway moving traffic cones. Twenty-three-year-old Ryan Scott Tanner of Valdese succumbed to his injuries at the scene. The second worker was transported to Catawba Valley Medical Center and was in stable condition Monday evening. Alcohol was not a contributing factor and charges are pending upon completion of the investigation.
