The Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency has announced that 18-year-old U.S. Army Corporal Rex W. Powell of Valdese, who was killed during the Korean War, was accounted for earlier this year by the DPAA laboratory. In the winter of 1950, Powell was reported missing in action when his unit was attacked by enemy forces near the Chosin Reservoir in North Korea.
Corporal Powell will be buried in Salisbury on Aug. 11 and is memorialized on the Courts of the Missing at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific.
