An airplane crash in Catawba County near Selkirk Drive around 11:30 a.m. Sunday morning killed two people, and knocked out power to more 18,000 residents in parts of Hickory, Caldwell County and Alexander County. According to the North Carolina Highway Patrol, a single-engine amphibious plane had just departed the Hickory Regional Airport when it struck overhead power lines and crashed into Lake Hickory. The pilot and a passenger died at the scene. The North Carolina Highway Patrol secured the scene and the FAA will conduct the investigation.
