Motorcycle Rider Turns Himself In


A motorcycle rider who was involved in a fatal police chase on Sept. 8 turned himself in at the Catawba County Jail Tuesday morning. 24-year-old Chanceler Timothy Johnson of Valdese is being charged with eluding arrest with motor vehicle causing death and misdemeanor probation violation from another county. The total bond listed is $85,000. Hickory Police Officer Atia Shamseldin was pursuing Johnson on Sept. 8 when the officer collided with another vehicle at the intersection of U.S. 70 and 13th Street SW. The minivan driver, 38-year-old Cynthia Nicole Lail of Hickory died at the scene and her son, 12-year-old Michael Lail, died on Sept. 10 at the hospital. The officer was placed on administrative leave while the North Carolina Highway Patrol investigates the crash.
