Unemployment rates rose in 41 counties in August with 28 counties falling and 31 remaining unchanged. Burke, Caldwell and Catawba remained unchanged from July to August while Alexander had a slight increase. The Hickory-Lenoir-Morganton metro unemployment rate was 3.4 percent and ranked as the fourth best in the state. All four counties remain in the state’s Top 50 lowest unemployment rates with Alexander still leading the way at 3.2 percent, followed by Catawba at 3.4 and Burke and Caldwell both at 3.5 percent.
