New Valdese Town Council Members Immediately Make Their Presence Known
Newly elected members of the Valdese Town Council are already having an impact as seen at the special session on December 4th.
Shortly after being sworn in, newly elected council member Heather Ward nominated also newly elected member Gary Ogle for Mayor Pro Tem, after existing member Paul Mears failed to receive the necessary 2nd to his nomination by existing member Roxanna Lowman. Ogle was confirmed by unanimous vote.
Then the third new addition to the council, Glenn Harvey, unexpectedly proposed the hiring of Edward Perrou to serve as the interim – interim town manager, while the town continues its search of an interim manager to temporarily replace Seth Eckard who was terminated by the council on November 20th.
Not previously included on the evening’s agenda, a motion was made by Harvey to add the item. That was followed by a failed attempt by Mears to delay the vote until the regular monthly council session on the 18th. Perrou was confirmed by a 3 to 2 vote, with all of the new members voting in favor, and existing members in opposition.
After the vote in favor of hiring Perrou, a motion to approve a contract with Western Piedmont Council of Government to assist the town with it’s search for an interim town manager was voted down, with Ogle, Ward, & Harvey opposing the motion.
Hickory High Wins NC State 3A Championship
Congratulations to The Hickory High School Red Tornadoes for winning the North Carolina State 3A Football Championship. They defeated the Seventy First Falcons From Fayetteville on Friday night at Keenan Memorial Stadium on the campus of the University of North Carolina with a score of 33 to 26. *It’s Hickory’s first championships since the State 2A division in 1996.
