Stewart Candidacy Challenge Overturned

A five member multi-county board of elections panel appointed by the North Carolina State Board of Elections conducted a hearing on December 28th to address a challenge against Alexander county attorney Melissa Stewart and her candidacy for the Office of North Carolina District Judge for District 32 – Seat 3.

The challenge filed by Cody Eugene James of Alexander County questioned if Stewart met the residency requirements to run for the office.

In a unanimous 5-0 vote the panel voted to overrule the challenge and allow Stewart to remain on the ballot for the November 2024 election.

According to North Carolina voting records Stewart has been a registered voter in Alexander County since 2019 and has served as magistrate judge since April of 2023.
