With temperature predicted to be in the teens this week. Here are some tips for keeping people, pets, pipes and plants safe from the cold weather.
*Make sure that you limit your exposure by minimizing your time outdoor.
*Be prepared for power outages. This includes having a flashlight, fresh batteries, candles or lanterns handy, as well as extra blankets and warm clothing available.
*Protect your pets by keeping them warm, dry and indoors as much as possible. In basement or access to a crawl space is an alternative if you are unable to bring them inside your home.
*Ensure that their food and water do not freeze.
*Limit their time outside as well
*Insulted your pipes if possible. Foam pipe insulation or something as simple as wrapping exposed pipes with newspaper can make a difference.
*Open sink cabinets to expose pipes to rooms heated air.
*Disconnect water hoses from water spigot. If you have a cut off value to the spigot, turn off the water at the value then drain the spigot before closing.
*Protect your plants by covering with sheets, blankets, towels, tarps or other plastic.
