A pursuit by law enforcement resulted in a fatal crash Thursday at approximately 10:45 pm on Playmore Beach Road in Caldwell County near the Caldwell, Burke County line.
North Carolina State Highway Patrol reports that Michael Scott Skelton, 41 of Lenoir, was being pursued by Caldwell County Sheriff’s deputies when he crossed the centerline, ran off the left side of the road, and hit a tree. Skelton was pronounced dead at the scene.
WSOC-TV reports that Skelton was arrested last month for possession of methamphetamine and was scheduled for a court appearance in February.
