On January 7, 2024, Burke County Sheriff’s Office deputies received a report of a robbery that occurred at
a private residence located on Propst Road outside of Morganton. The victim alleged that a male whom she
had met through Facebook Marketplace came to her residence and attempted to trade a fake gold coin for
jewelry. When the victim noticed the coin was fake, the suspect grabbed all the jewelry and fled from the
residence. Through further investigation, detectives identified the suspect as Brandon Scott Meeks, who was
using a false name on Facebook Marketplace. A warrant was issued for his arrest, and he was taken into
custody without incident on January 19, 2024, where he received a $10,000.00 secured bond.
The Burke County Sheriff’s Office has recently received numerous reports of scams through Facebook
Marketplace and other websites. Please use caution when meeting with any individuals from the internet. If
necessary, it is recommended to meet in a well-lit public area and have other people present with you.
