The Alexander County Board of Education met Tuesday evening and approved plans to begin a process to reduce staff in the system.
The board decided to move forward with the recommendation from the finance committee to reduce 22 positions for a savings of nearly $1.5 million dollars.
A main contributing factor cited for the needed reduction is that the school system has lost more than 900 students over the past ten years. With each student the state provides about $8,500 and Alexander County in 2021 contributed $1,781 per student. The loss in enrollment is attributed to the declining birth rates in Alexander County and more options for families such as private and home schools.
At present, the Alexander County Schools employs about 740 full and part-time employees.
