At approximately 12:35 a.m. on Tuesday the Newton Police Department received a call from a female who said that she had been shot while in the parking lot of the Catawba County Government Center at 25 Government Drive. The female caller left the area and was later located in the parking lot of Planet Fitness at 2725 Northwest Boulevard. While first responders were providing medical services to the victim, the alleged shooter drove into the parking lot and began to shoot into the area. Officers returned fire striking and disabling the suspect. The female victim and the male suspect, both who had sustained multiple gunshot wounds, were transported to Catawba Valley Medical Center where they were then flown to Atrium Health Medical Center in Charlotte.
The female victim has been identified as Heather Renee Clanton 38 of Taylorsville. she is currently listed in stable condition. the male suspect has been identified as Jamar Franklin Robinson 33 of Newton. Robinson succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the hospital.
The officers involved have been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigations findings.
