CALDWELL COUNTY — Representative Destin Hall of Caldwell County is expected to be nominated for Speaker of the House within the North Carolina House of Representatives, although the vote is not set to take place until January 2025. The position of speaker is opening up again after Representative Tim Moore completes his fifth term at the end of this year. Hall, if elected to the position, will become the youngest speaker in N.C. history at age 37.

According to the Associated Press, a plan is in place by high-ranking North Carolina House Republicans to nominate Representative Hall as Speaker of the North Carolina House of Representatives. The leading candidates for the position were Representative Hall and Majority Leader John Bell of Wayne County, until Bell promised to support Hall in the latter half of 2023. Since then, Bell is set to replace Hall as Rules Chairman, according to a report by Axios.

Hall was elected Representative of the 87th district in 2017, and in 2020 became the youngest person to be appointed chairman of the House Committee on Rules, Calendar and Operations, where he has served for the last four years. Hall was appointed by Moore. According to his website, Hall remains a proud resident of Caldwell County.

Caldwell County manager Donald Duncan said, “I’ve worked with many members of the General Assembly over the last 22 years, all of them great to work with. Destin is the best yet. He loves his community and is in constant contact about how he can help our citizens with fair and just legislation and resources from our state government. I consider him a great partner in our goal to make Caldwell one of the best places to live in North Carolina.”
Caldwell County Commissioner Donnie Potter said, “He has a true love of Caldwell County, a true passion to work with his constituents to make the county a better place to live, work and play. He works hard to find common ground to make both Caldwell County and North Carolina as a whole a better place.”
