City of Lenoir Councilman Jonathan Beal has been selected to serve on the North Carolina League of Municipalities’ (NCLM) Legislative Policy Committee.
NCLM represents the interests of cities and towns across the state. Through NCLM, cities can work together to advocate for municipal interests, protect local decision making authority, better serve residents, and improve quality of life. NCLM provides many services to city councils and staff including education and training, legal and financial consulting, research, and advocacy in state government.
Councilman Beal said he is looking forward to representing the interests of Lenoir residents on the Legislative Policy Committee (LPC).
“I’m honored to be selected. This is another way I can serve the taxpayers of our great city,” Councilman Beal said. “I always have in mind the quality of life for all of our residents. As legislative goals are presented to the committee, I will advocate for what helps the City of Lenoir to offer the best services possible.”
LPC members review and vet policy proposals from across the League’s full membership. After review by the NCLM Board of Directors, and a final vote by member cities and towns, the aim is an advocacy agenda that is both focused and reflects the priorities of all the state’s municipalities.
“Service on the Legislative Policy Committee is crucial to ensuring that the policy goals of the League of Municipalities are representative of the broad array of North Carolina cities and towns, and the needs of their residents,” said NCLM President and Durham Mayor Pro-Tem Mark-Anthony Middleton. “By having wide representation of municipalities, big and small, from the mountains to the coast, we know that state leaders will see that these priorities reflect the aims of a cross-section of North Carolinians. ”
Councilman Beal said serving on the LPC will also be a good opportunity to learn what’s happening with other cities and towns in North Carolina.
“I look forward to learning more about current issues that all city governments are facing,” Councilman Beal said. “Being part of the process will be very beneficial to my understanding of complex issues, and offer the opportunity to make a difference.”
Councilman Beal has served on the City of Lenoir Council since 2017. In addition to City Council, he is President of the Caldwell Arts Council, board member of Freedman Cultural Center, and he serves on the National League of Cities Small City Council.
