PRESS RELEASE: Morganton Department of Public Safety, 09/17/2024
On 9/17/2024 at approximately 3:05 pm, MDPS Officers were dispatched to Lowe’s Hardware on Burkemont Avenue in reference to shots fired. When Officers arrived they located the individual who had allegedly fired shots from a handgun.
The Morganton Criminal Investigations Division responded to the scene for further investigation. Statements made by witnesses at the scene indicated that the incident began when a shoplifter attempted to exit the store without paying for items. Witnesses also stated that the shots were fired outside the store as the shoplifter was attempting to leave the parking lot in a vehicle.
There were no injuries reported during the incident and the alleged shoplifter left the scene prior to officers arrival. The alleged shooter was not an employee of Lowe’s Hardware.
