Alexander County Board of Education passes $63.7 million budget

The Alexander County Board of Education met for their regularly scheduled meeting on Tuesday, October 8, 2024. One of the main priorities for the meeting was to hear the proposed budget for the 2024-25 school year from Chief Financial Officer Sharon Mehaffey and Financial Assistant Andrea Robinette. The Total budget for the current school year is $63,747,038.

These are the funding categories for the budget. State Funds are in the amount of $37,243,658. This is where the majority of funding comes from for Alexander County Schools. The General Expense Fund (Local Current Expense Revenues) is in the amount of $7,608,040. Federal Grant Revenues are in the amount of $3,379,433. Capital Outlay Revenues are in the amount of $7,427,601. School Food Services Revenues are in the Amount of $3,491,544. Child Care/Local Use Revenues (Before and After School Care) are in the amount of $307,370. Local Funds/Specific Revenues are in the amount of $4,289,392.

Mehaffey was pleased to announce that none of the current fund balance, which is currently sitting at the amount of $1,095,084, is being used at this time to fund the proposed budget. She did say that the budget is very tight and she is concerned about “surprises” that could occur during the school year. The proposed budget was passed unanimously by the Board.
