On Thursday, October 17, at approximately 5:35 p.m., the NC State Highway Patrol responded to and investigated a fatal collision in Burke County on US 70 near Lockee Street. A 2023 BMW X1 traveling west on US 70 failed to reduce speed adequately and collided with a 2022 Taotao moped which had slowed down to turn right into a private driveway.
The driver of the moped, Daniel Wayne Salmons, 57, of Connelly Springs, was thrown from the moped and succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
The driver of the BMW, Haygen Rashae Sigmon, 20, of Connelly Springs, was not injured.
The initial investigation indicates impairment was not a contributing factor in the collision. Charges are pending upon completion of the ongoing investigation and consultation with the Burke County District Attorney’s office. US 70 was closed in the area for approximately two hours during the on-scene investigation.
