Burke County Board Receives Approval for Removal of Commercial Debris

Burke County, NC— The Burke County Board of Commissioners has received approval for the removal of commercial debris at no cost to businesses.

The Burke County Board of Commissioners has been working proactively since the first day of Hurricane Helene to secure recovery resources for county residents. The diligent work has paid off today with the approval and subsequent prospective policy on commercial debris removal.

Commercial debris removal beings immediately and will follow the same procedures as residential debris removal.

Commercial debris removal is not typically a reimbursable cost without prior via both FEMA and North Carolina Emergency Management (NCEM), both of which were obtained Thursday, October 24th, 2024.

“The diligent work of our dedicated Board of County Commissioners has resulted in a resource for Burke County businesses and residents that is usually not granted by FEMA,” explained County Manager Brian Epley. “The commercial debris removal will begin immediately, reducing health hazards and helping to more efficiently clean storm-damaged properties throughout our county.”

For businesses who have already paid for commercial debris removal, please retain all relevant receipts and documentation. Approval for reimbursing hauled debris removal costs is being sought, and further information on this will be forthcoming. If FEMA grants approval for reimbursement, proper records will be crucial for businesses to receive reimbursement.

“On behalf of the Burke County Board of Commissioners as well as the County staff, thank you for your patience and fortitude as we navigate this together,” expressed County Manager Epley. “We are working to ensure that not only are all our residents’ needs met in the moment, but that we are able to secure reimbursement to aid in the recovery and future of our county.”

As a reminder, all debris should be placed as close to the roadway as possible without obstructing traffic, on either the curb or the DOT right-of-way. Keep clear access to all fire hydrants and mailboxes. Debris should be separated into three (3) piles for trees and vegetation, white goods (appliances), and all other debris (including furniture, household items, construction items, etc.).
