The City of Morganton has hired Keith Rigsbee as its new City Attorney.

“I’m really excited to be involved with the team that has led the city so successfully. It’s an honor to be invited to help with that,” Rigsbee said after his appointment during the City Council’s meeting tonight

Senior leaders have been searching for permanent legal counsel since attorney Louis Vinay retired Sept. 1. Since that time, Vinay has served in an interim capacity until his replacement could be found.

Rigsbee, long time Morganton resident, is coming to the City from Starnes and Aycock Law Firm based in Morganton. He received his law degree from Wake Forest University and has been practicing for 34 years. He is excited about the new opportunities working for the City of Morganton will offer.

Rigsbee said, “I am very familiar with Morganton and have seen it evolve and grow through the years, and I have personally witnessed and experienced its successes. It is my honor to have been invited to participate and work with the team that has guided the City in such a successful way.”

Rigsbee will be responsible for providing legal advice and assistance to City Council and City staff. This in-house position provides perspective to and participates in the decision-making process of the City. It also covers a wide range of legal areas, including economic development, public – private partnerships, working with lobbyists, contracts, real estate, planning and zoning and employment issues.

“We are thrilled that Keith has decided to join the City of Morganton family. We believe he will be a great fit and will help guide city leaders in all legal matters. Welcome Keith,” said City Manager Sally Sandy

City of Morganton Mayor Ronnie Thompson also welcomed him.

“Myself and the City Council are excited to see Keith join the City. It has been a long process to fill the position and we believe his expertise and dedication will be instrumental as we work together to serve our citizens and this community. We look forward to his leadership and collaboration in making our city a safer, fairer place for all.”

Rigsbee said his wide-ranging legal experience will serve him well in this new role.

“I have practiced law in many different areas throughout my legal career, and I have a wide range of experience in many areas.  I have spent much of my legal career in courtrooms throughout the western part of our State, and have a wealth of experience with litigation matters.  I have been involved with zoning and code enforcement matters.  As a general practice attorney for over three decades now, I have encountered all sorts of different legal issues, and I have had the privilege of representing many different citizens of our City and County in their important legal matters.”

Rigsbee resides in Morganton with his wife Traci and three children.
