Neighboring Watauga and McDowell County Sheriff’s Offices have received several reports from citizens regarding phone calls from someone pretending to be with the Sheriff’s Office. These scammers may have some of your personal information and sound legitimate, but no County Sheriff’s Office will call you about unpaid taxes or money owed or never asked for any type of monetary consideration to avoid criminal prosecution.
These scammers even appear to have the ability to duplicate phone numbers to make it appear that they are calling from the sheriff’s office.
