Sixteen new laws went into effect in North Carolina on Sunday December 1st .
The new wide ranging laws include:
- Requiring compliance with Immigration Detainers and Administrative warrants.
- Raising the age from 16 to 17 for juveniles who commit certain felonies and are automatically charged as an adult .
- A law requiring the Department of Labor to develop human trafficking awareness training.
- An act to provide a cancellation period for residential roof replacement or repair contracts.
- An act to expand the streets or highways on which a modified vehicle may legally operate.
- It is now illegal to sell tianeptine, also known as “gas station heroin,” in North Carolina.
Other new laws included changes within the state’s Department of Agriculture, Department of Transportation, the State Bar Review, amendments to various NC State building codes, changes in the insurance industry and a two part Disaster Recovery Act .
The new laws that rolled out December 1st were enacted during the 2023-2024 General Assembly session.
