Traffic fatality in Alexander County on Saturday

Taylorsville– On Saturday, February 22, at approximately 7:40 p.m., the NC State Highway Patrol responded to and investigated a fatal collision in Alexander County on NC 16 at Alspaugh Dam Road. A 1997 Toyota Camry traveling northeast on Alspaugh Dam Road, failed to stop at a stop sign and collided with a 2017 Toyota Tacoma traveling south on NC 16.

The driver of the Camry, Jason Scott Chapman, 24, of Stony Point, succumbed to his injuries at the scene.

The driver of the Tacoma, Jose Guadalupe Gutierrez Estrada, 35, of Taylorsville, and other passengers were transported to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The initial investigation indicates that impairment and speed were contributing factors in the collision.  During the on-scene investigation, the roadway was closed in the area for three hours.  No charges will be filed in this case.
