THE PAPER: What’s the deal with smoke in the air? Controlled burns in Burke County

The smoky air is not from a wildfire but from controlled burns on Monday, Feb. 24, and Tuesday, Feb. 25, at various parks in Burke County. FOOTHILLS CONSERVANCY / FOR THE PAPER

There’s something in the air: Smoke is emanating from controlled burns happening this week in Burke County.

The Foothills Conservancy of North Carolina partnered with the Nature Conservancy for a controlled burn, also known as “prescribed burning,” at Oak Hill Park on Monday, Feb. 24. The Oak Hill Fire Department assisted in the operation yesterday.

According to the N.C. Forest Service’s Burke County Office, there will be two more control burns on Tuesday, Feb. 25: One at Lake James State Park and the other at John’s River, headed by the N.C. Wildlife Resources.

Personnel of the two organizations will oversee their own controlled burns. Other fire departments stand ready if needed to assist.

There are no wildfires in Burke County at this time.
