The Burke County Commissioners held a hearing last week regarding the occupancy of a building located at 8123 George Hildebrand School Road, that has been deemed unsafe by inspectors, and is inhabited by nine families from the Marshall Islands, and members of the Marshallese New Beginnings Church. After a three hour deliberation the Commissioners decided to uphold the order for the building to be vacated by May 20th, however they granted a 30-day continuous allowing the church to obtain grant funding or secure mortgage to bring the building up to code. Safety issues and code violations date back to 2022, and include lack of a primary heat source, septic system concerns, access to functional restrooms, lead paint, and fire safety concerns. It’s reported that the estimated cost of repairs is $500,000.
