The Grandfather Ranger District has temporarily closed the Wilson Creek Day Use Area on the Pisgah National Forest to ensure public safety and support storm recovery operations.
The closure covers all USDA Forest Service lands within the Wilson Creek Day Use Area along Brown Mountain Beach Road, as well as the Wilson Ridge Trailhead. Commonly referred to as the Wilson Creek Gorge, the day use area includes parking and stair access from the end of the pavement on Brown Mountain Beach Road to Craig Creek Road.
This closure is necessary to partner with Caldwell County to reduce risks to public health and safety, allow crews to remove storm debris, and allow the NC Department of Transportation (NC DOT) to complete critical road repairs. Brown Mountain Beach Road is a NC DOT road and is not included in this closure. Active construction managed by NC DOT will be taking place on Brown Mountain Beach Road, and delays in travel are expected. For updates from NC DOT, visit drivenc.gov. Please pay careful attention to posted signs and flaggers in the area.
The Wilson Creek Day Use Area will remain closed until September 1, 2025, or until it is deemed safe to reopen. The U.S. Forest Service Mortimer Campground off NC-90 will remain open for the 2025 season.
