Simply Green to take over sanitation services in Valdese

Due to increasing complaints and irregular pick-up services, the Town of Valdese is making a switch with its sanitation and recycling services to Simply Green.

Since 2017, the town has contracted with Republic Services, which has received a growing number of complaints.

During the second 2025-2026 budget workshop on Monday, May 12, the council unanimously approved a contract with Simply Green. With the contract approved, CFO/Assistant Town Manager Bo Weichel can now order the custom carts. The cart delivery will take about six weeks.

The carts, with the town’s logo modeled into the side, will be forest green with a black lid for trash and a blue lid for recycling.

The town pays Republic $15.02 for each of its 1,800 customers, a rate expected to increase to $15.77 in the next fiscal year. Simply Green’s rate is $14.27, which will increase to $14.67. The town charges residents $14.30.

Switching to Simply Green will save Valdese about $28,000 in the first year, with more long-term savings over the next few years.

A $30,000 grant through the N.C. Department of Environmental Quality will help offset the cost of the carts.

Residents will receive a notice of the change in their June utility bills. Weichel said that the town’s goal is to implement Simply Green’s services in July.
