City of Lenoir hires Lauren Hartley as next City Clerk

The City of Lenoir has hired Lauren Hartley to serve as the next City Clerk. As Clerk, Hartley will provide administrative support to City Council and the City Manager.

Hartley has worked for the City of Lenoir in the Planning Department since 2019. As Planning Technician, she answers questions about City Code and handles sensitive information. She keeps records for the department and serves as a secretary for various City boards. As secretary, she prepares agendas and minutes for the Planning Board, Board of Adjustment, and the Lenoir Tourism Development Authority.

Hartley has also served as Deputy City Clerk since September 2023, filling in for the current City Clerk as needed.

City Manager Scott Hildebran said Hartley’s experience with the City of Lenoir and City boards has prepared her to be the next City Clerk.

“Lauren’s primary responsibility will be to prepare agendas and record minutes of City Council meetings,” City Manager Hildebran said. “She does a great job with her current boards, and I know she will do very well with Council. She’s dedicated, organized, and very responsible. Those are excellent qualities for a City Clerk.”

Hartley will give notice of Council meetings and keep a journal of the proceedings of the Council. She will maintain records and documents pertaining to the affairs of the city, and she may perform other duties as may be required by law or as the Council directs.

Hartley said she is looking forward to becoming the City Clerk.

“I am honored to be considered for this position and excited to continue my service to Lenoir,” Hartley said. “As a native of Lenoir, I have enjoyed working for the City and seeing it grow and thrive.”

Hartley earned an Associate’s Degree in Business Administration from Caldwell Community College & Technical Institute (CCC&TI). She completed the UNC School of Government Clerks Certification Institute in 2023, and she is a member of the International Institute of Municipal Clerks. Hartley is also a Notary Public, which is required to serve as City Clerk. Before coming to work at the City Lenoir, Hartley worked for ten years as an administrative assistant at CCC&TI.

Hartley and her daughter, Ava, live in Lenoir.

During the next couple of months, Hartley will work with current City Clerk Shirley Cannon to transition to the new role.

Cannon has worked for the City of Lenoir since 1998 and served as City Clerk since 2004. She plans to retire as of Aug. 1 this year.

“Shirley Cannon has been a dedicated clerk to the City, and I’m honored to follow in the position after her retirement,” Hartley said.

Hartley will take over as City Clerk on Aug. 1.
