On June 22, 2025, the Burke County Sheriff’s Office responded to 1675 Berrytown Avenue, Morganton, to a report of a child suffering from a single gunshot wound. Prior to arrival, deputies were notified that the victim was approximately 3 years old and had a gunshot wound to the foot. Deputies arrived on the scene, alongside Burke County EMS, and immediately rendered aid to the injured child. The child was transported to Artium Health Carolina’s Medical Center via helicopter.
Preliminary investigation revealed that the incident occurred while children were left unsupervised inside the home. The firearm involved was not properly secured, which ultimately led to this preventable incident. On June 23, 2025, warrants for arrest were issued on the homeowner, Danny Berry, for Felony Possession of Firearm by a Convicted Felon and Misdemeanor Failure to Secure a Firearm in the Protection of a Minor.
Berry turned himself in at the Burke County Magistrate’s Office, where he was served with his warrants. Berry was issued a $40,000 unsecured bond and
given a court date of June 26, 2025.
