On Sunday (July 20th), at just before 9:30am, MDPS officers responded to UNC Health Blue Ridge (2201 S Sterling St) in reference to an armed male subject who had assaulted a female visitor. UNC Health Security notified officers of the last known location of the suspect, who was seen exiting the front of the hospital and walking down from the parking deck. Security lost visual of the suspect as he left the parking deck area. Responding officers began searching the campus for the suspect. A perimeter was established around the hospital in the event the suspect returned while the search was being conducted.
Further investigation revealed, that both the suspect and the victim were both visitors of the same patient when the altercation occurred. According to the victim and witness statements, the suspect, identified as Jason Scott Inman, 44, drew a handgun and pointed it at the victim while making threats. Inman then began to strike the female victim in the head with the handgun, causing head trauma that required treatment. Inman then fled from the hospital. UNC Health security was able to provide video surveillance footage of Inman leaving the hospital.
MDPS requested assistance from the Caldwell Co Sheriff’s Office in locating Inman at his home address. At 1135 hours, MDPS was notified that Jason Inman had been taken into custody at 4668 Oak Hill School Rd, Lenoir, NC by Caldwell Co deputies.
Jason Scott Inman was charged by MDPS for the following:
- F-Assault with a Deadly Weapon w/ Intent to Kill
- F-Assault with a Deadly Weapon Inflicting Serious Injury
- M-Assault by Pointing a Gun
- M-Communicating Threats
- M-Carrying a Concealed Weapon
- M-Going Armed to the Terror of the People.
Inman was confined at the Caldwell County Jail under a $150,000 secured bond.
In addition to Caldwell Co Sheriff’s Office, the Burke Co Sheriff’s Office and NC State Highway Patrol assisted with the incident at UNC Health.
