Newton Police office indicted for 2nd degree murder in fatal shooting

On Monday a Catawba County Grand Jury indicted Newton Police Officer Carlos Uribe for second-degree murder in connection with the fatal shooting of 21-year-old Camden Childers. on June 26th of this year.

Regarding the decision to pursue charges District attorney Scott Reilly said “After a thorough review of body-worn camera footage, dash camera footage, witness interviews and investigative materials compiled by the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (NCSBI), my office has concluded that the use of deadly force in the recent officer-involved shooting in Newton was not legally justified”.

The incident that led to the shooting occurred on June 26th after Childers led police on a high speed chase that ended when the motorcycle that Childers was operating collided with a police vehicle. During the physical altercation that followed, Childers was shot by police.

Uribe turned himself in following the indictment. Bond was set at $100,000. Uribe remains on administrative leave without pay. A trial date has yet to be announced.
