Officials have confirmed that childcare facility Creative Beginnings of Lenoir has officially dropped its appeal to reopen, and will no longer seek to regain its license after being forced to shut down just two days after 16 month old Maddy Mitchell was found unresponsive and later pronounced deceased back in May of this year.
Alexandra Lee Coffey, a daycare worker at the facility was arrested and charged with involuntary manslaughter in connection to the death.
While the daycare had passed its most recent inspection, state records show a history of violations—including issues with safe sleep procedures and incomplete staff training.
The facility’s suspension has remained in effect throughout the investigation—and now, with the appeal dropped, that closure is permanent.
