Burke house fire now being investigated as a double homicide

Burke County Sheriff’s office announced the identity of the second victim in the house fire from Sunday August the 31st.
The victim was identified as 76 year old Joseph Kincaid Byrd, Jr. of Morganton. The Burke County Sheriff’s Office is investigating this incident as a double homicide. The sheriff’s office had previously said they would release the second victims identity following the completion of an autopsy. No further information regarding the cause of death or the autopsy results have been made available.
The investigation is ongoing and additional information will be released as necessary.

The Burke County Sheriff’s Office, State Bureau of Investigation and the Burke County Fire Marshal’s Office are continuing to investigate the cause of the fire and cause of deaths of two individuals from the fatal house fire on Swink Street in Morganton.
Agencies involved responded and remained on scene until the late hours of Sunday night. One victim, Michael Curtis Hallyburton, 63, of Morganton, was located deceased at the residence. The name of the second victim will be released after the identity is confirmed pending an autopsy.
