Lenoir, NC – (November 21, 2025) – The Caldwell County Board of Education is proud to announce the appointment of Dr. Thomas Howell as the next Superintendent of
Caldwell County Schools, effective December 1, 2025. Dr. Howell, who currently serves as the Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources, was selected following a
rigorous, comprehensive search.

understanding of our community, his proven track record of creating successful learning environments as a teacher and principal, and his excellent ability to build strong teams
make him a great choice to lead our school system. He is the leader ready to preserve and advance the extraordinary stability, academic success, and financial health our
district has achieved.”
A Career Defined by Excellence and Community
Dr. Howell brings 26 years of dedicated experience to this new role. He began his career in the classroom as an Elementary School teacher, quickly demonstrating his
commitment to student growth. His path into leadership saw him excel first as an Assistant Principal and, for 13 years, as a highly effective Principal. During this time, he
led multiple schools to distinction and academic excellence. He built environments that were known for welcoming every child, empowering them to excel as students and
citizens.
Before joining Caldwell County, Dr. Howell served as the Director of Human Resources for Avery County Schools. Since joining Caldwell County Schools, he has made an
indelible impact on our school district, helping to develop the teams, protocols, and policies that make Caldwell County Schools a great place to learn and work.
